one of our guinea pigs died in the summer…it was fucking horrible. tom took her to the vet to have to put down and returned with her in a box. we told the kids she was sick…we let them see her in the box. they pet her a few times. we told them that you bury pets after they die…and to go get some things she loved to put in the box in the ground. they ran around collecting clover and grass, put it in her box, and tom dug the hole. we were all blubbering…really ridiculously sobbing…for 1/2 an hour. they had seen the “lion king”…so they were convinced that she would turn into dirt, nourish the tree, blah blah blah. no mention of heaven or the gods (as tom has caleb trained to say). just sick, dead, buried, and eventually dirt. ev recently asked to dig her up and see her…luckily it’s winter. i hope she doesn’t ask again the spring. good luck!!!!
